Karnataka Monsoon Fury: IMD Issues Red Alert As Coastal Districts Brace For Heavy Downpour
With the monsoon entering an aggressive phase, multiple districts across the state are on high alert for localised flooding, waterlogging, and strong winds.
Extreme Weather Warning Until July 7
The southwest monsoon has intensified dramatically across Karnataka, unleashing a relentless torrent of widespread rainfall over the coastal and Malnad regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially forecast that this severe wet spell will continue with full force until July 7, 2026. Given the threat of dangerous thunderstorms, frequent lightning, and gusty winds, state authorities have advised residents to exercise extreme caution and avoid vulnerable areas near water bodies or unstable slopes.
Red Alert Sounded for Coastal Belts; Malnad Under Watch
The weather department has scaled up its warnings, issuing a critical Red Alert for July 2 for Karnataka’s key coastal districts, including Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada. These areas are expected to witness extremely heavy to isolated catastrophic downpours. Accompanying wind speeds of 30 to 40 kmph are highly likely, significantly multiplying the immediate risks of urban waterlogging, uprooted trees, and structural damage to local infrastructure.
Concurrently, the picturesque but vulnerable Malnad districts—including Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, and Kodagu—are bracing for aggressive thunderstorms and high-velocity winds that could disrupt normal life.
Orange Alert Shifts Southward by July 5
As the monsoon trough shifts, rain intensity is projected to affect the state's interior later in the week. The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for key pockets of South Interior Karnataka on July 5.
Additionally, a steady pocket of moderate rainfall is forecast to sweep across several districts, including Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Mysuru, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Ballari, Koppal, Bagalkote, Vijayanagara, and Raichur. Local administrations in these zones have been placed on standby to address sudden rises in water levels.
Cool and Cloudy: Bengaluru Weather Outlook
For the state capital, Bengaluru Urban and Bengaluru Rural, the immediate forecast brings a slight reprieve from extreme downpours but keeps the monsoon vibe alive. The city is expected to remain under generally cloudy skies with moderate temperatures due to thick cloud cover.
While widespread destructive rain is not on the immediate cards for Bengaluru, light to moderate showers accompanied by sudden gusty winds will continue to sweep through the tech hub. Commuters have been advised to monitor live traffic and weather updates, as even light showers can trigger localised traffic gridlock during peak hours.
