Suspense Crime, Digital Desk : With the retirement of Justice JK Maheshwari, Justice PS Narasimha will become a member of the Supreme Court Collegium. Justice Narasimha, fifth in seniority, will officially remain a part of the Collegium until his retirement on May 2, 2028.

Justice Maheshwari demitted office on Sunday after nearly five years of service. The collegium will now comprise Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Vikram Nath, Justice BV Nagarathna, Justice MM Sundresh and Justice PS Narasimha.

The collegium system, which came into existence after a Supreme Court decision in 1993, involves five top judges recommending the appointment, transfer, and promotion of judges to the Supreme Court and 25 high courts. Under this system, the government can return the recommendation to the collegium. While it usually accepts the recommendation reiterated by the collegium, in some cases the government has returned the file or not responded to the recommendation.

Justice Narasimha was born in Hyderabad on May 3, 1963. He graduated from Nizam College, Hyderabad with a triple major in Economics, Political Science and Public Administration and studied law from the Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi in 1988.

Enrolled as an advocate the same year, he practiced in the High Court of Hyderabad, civil courts, and tribunals, before transferring his practice to the Supreme Court. He participated in several Supreme Court cases, including Constitution Bench cases.

During this period, he was appointed as the commission's counsel for the Justice Chinnappa Reddy Commission. He also served as a member of the Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee. Justice Narasimha was elevated directly from the bar to the Supreme Court judge on August 31, 2021.
