Got a free traveler’s dream? You're not alone. Women across many states now get free rides on city buses. Andhra Pradesh just stepped it up a notch. Under the new Stree Shakti Yojana, over 18 lakh women rode the buses free on Monday. That’s a record, and a remarkable way to kick off a program like this.

This promise came straight from the campaign trail. Before the 2024 elections, CM N. Chandrababu Naidu vowed to give free bus rides to every woman in the state. Monday’s count shows he’s keeping his word.

The Stree Shakti Yojana launched on Independence Day. According to late-night reports, Monday-just the first working day after the launch-saw the record 18 lakh rides. Across the state, the buses were apparently more than just crowded; they were free and filled with cheers.

In the first four days, 47 lakh women have already claimed this free ride. That’s the CM’s own count. He tells press that he’s hearing how much women appreciate the savings in their daily budgets.
