Monsoon Alert: Widespread Heavy Rains Expected,The Monsoon is making headlines this week, with heavy rains lashing many states, especially Mumbai, where flooding has created major disruptions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that scattered rainfall is likely across most states from August 20 to 24. The development of a low-pressure system over the northwest region near northern Andhra Pradesh and along the south Odisha coast has intensified the situation, with the system centred over the west-central Bay of Bengal. This is the primary cause of the looming downpours.
Rain Warnings: Which States to Watch
The IMD has issued a caution that heavy rains will persist in Goa, Maharashtra, and Gujarat for the remainder of the week. The monsoon has also brought cooler temperatures across these regions. Specific alerts cover coastal Andhra Pradesh, coastal Karnataka, Konkan, Goa, and multiple districts of Maharashtra, where flooding and landslide threats are top concerns. Stormy weather is likely to spread and persist in the coming days.
Alerts are in place for northern states as well, with heavy precipitation expected across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan. Further, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are also on the list, underscoring a near-nationwide weather alert. Authorities and residents are advised to stay vigilant and ensure safety preparations are in place.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised an alert for intense rain across several regions, including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, for the upcoming week.
Northeastern Rain Alert
The IMD warns that isolated areas of coastal Karnataka, Gujarat, Konkan, and Goa, as well as Madhya Maharashtra, can expect heavy rain, with pockets possibly seeing very heavy falls. The IMD also forecasts Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur to experience very intense rain from August 20 to 24.
Bihar and Jharkhand Notice
From August 20 to 25, heavy downpours are expected in both Bihar and Jharkhand. Meanwhile, Chhattisgarh and eastern Madhya Pradesh should see lighter rain, plus thunderstorms and lightning in the next five days. Over the same week, moderate rain is also forecast for Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Uttarakhand, and Rajasthan, with chances of both thunder and lightning.
