
Mexico will see what happens with the threat put forth by US President Donald Trump regarding the tariffs set to be imposed on Mexico’s southern borders. It is likely that Mexico will get affected, though the president states that there are other plans that are going to help minimize the damage.
Claudia Sheinbaum, in consideration of the situation gave a short press briefing about some of her decisions, while also stating that Trump’s tariffs will not catch Mexico off guard.
Sheinbaum without conveying the details of her plans stated, “We have a plan B, C, D,” which suggests that Mexico has set the stage for negotiations.
In a defense discussion that took place last week, Mexican diplomats and their American colleagues met hoping Mexico will balance out its security policies with a more aggressive economic approach bordering on tariffs.
Trump has claimed Mexico along with Canada to be derivatives of drug cartels who were not doing anything to reduce the spread of synthetic drugs like fentanyl alongside closing off borders to immigrants. Trump has promised these countries will face overwhelming tariffs unless they get their act together.
Sheinbaum moreover termed the talks in Washington as ‘cordial,’ assuring that cooperation so far with the US has been very good.
