Jagannath Rath Yatra 2024

This year the Jagannath Rath Yatra will be taken out from 04:28 am on 7 July 2024, which will continue till 05:01 am on 8 July 2024. After this, the Rath Yatra will reach Lord Jagannath’s aunt’s house i.e. Gundicha temple. Where after a week’s rest, the Lord will return to the Jagannath temple on July 16.

Sister Subhadra had expressed the desire to visit the city

There is a mythological story behind the beginning of Jagannath Rath Yatra. According to Padma Purana, once Lord Jagannath’s sister Subhadra expressed her desire to see the city. Then her brother Lord Jagannath and Balabhadra seated their sister in the chariot and showed her the entire city. During this journey, they went to their aunt Gundicha’s house where they rested for 7 days. It is believed that from then onwards the tradition of taking out Jagannath Yatra started.

When Lord

Jagannath’s Rath Yatra reaches Gundicha Mata’s temple once a year, he is given a grand welcome and felicitation there. The temple is thoroughly washed and decorated with flowers. This ritual is called Gundicha Marjan. Then Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra are given a grand welcome. They are given a grand welcome for 7 days. After this, Lord Jagannath returns to the temple with great pomp and show.
