Love Marriage in UP Ends in Armed Raid, Abduction and Violence - Family Fears for Newlywed's Life
Eight days. That's all the time Simran and Arbaaz had together as a married couple before her family came for them.
What unfolded at Arbaaz's home in Manpur village, under Dilari police station in Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh, on the evening of May 11th reads less like a family dispute and more like a planned, coordinated attack — complete with firearms, looting, and the forcible abduction of a newly married woman.
A Marriage That Took Five Years and Police Protection to Happen
Simran and Arbaaz, both residents of the same village, had been in a relationship for five years. The girl's family was firmly opposed to the union throughout. When the couple finally decided to marry, they did so on May 2nd — in the presence of police, which itself speaks to how hostile the situation had become.
For eight days, life appeared to continue. Then, on the evening of May 11th, while most of Arbaaz's family was away attending another wedding elsewhere, the attack came.
What Happened That Evening
Simran's father Intezaar, along with his brothers and a group of 20 to 25 armed individuals, descended on Arbaaz's home. According to the family's account, the attackers entered the house, smashed CCTV cameras to eliminate evidence, and proceeded to ransack the property. Approximately 12 to 13 tolas of gold jewellery and mobile phones were allegedly stolen. The safe in the house was broken into and cash and valuables were taken.
The violence against the people present in the house was severe. Women and elderly members of the family — those who had stayed home — were beaten. The family alleges that a paralysed elderly man was shot during the attack. A woman undergoing treatment for cancer was also assaulted. Live cartridges found at the scene after the attackers left are being cited as evidence of the weapons used.
Before leaving, the group allegedly abducted Simran from the house and took her away.
A Family Living in Fear
Family members Rehana and Gulshan spoke about what they witnessed and its aftermath. They described men in the house being beaten severely, and the safe being broken open and looted. But beyond the physical attack and the theft, what terrifies the family most right now is Simran's safety.
They allege that the attackers have been issuing threats — warning that Simran will be killed, and that Arbaaz's family will be framed in false cases. For a family that has already been through an armed assault, these threats are not being taken lightly.
Police Action
Superintendent of Police (Rural) Kunwar Akash Singh confirmed that a case has been registered based on the complaint filed by Simran's husband. Six named individuals and three unidentified persons have been charged in connection with the attack. Sections related to assault, robbery, and criminal intimidation have been applied. Special police teams have been formed to locate and arrest the accused, and evidence collection from the scene is underway.
The Bigger Picture
What happened in Manpur village is not an isolated incident. Across India, interfaith and inter-caste love marriages continue to trigger violent backlash from families who place perceived social honour above the safety and autonomy of their own children. The fact that this couple had to marry under police supervision already tells you how dangerous the situation was long before the attack occurred.
Simran made a choice five years in the making. Whether law enforcement can now ensure her safety — and bring those responsible to justice — is the question that matters most right now.
