The Lok Sabha adopted a statutory resolution early Thursday confirming the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur. BJP’s Amit Malviya called out Congress members for their absence during the debate.

On social platform X, Malviya wrote, “Parliament debating Manipur at 2am with the Home Minister and Defence Minister in Lok Sabha. Congress members should stay and participate in the discussion. Not run away!”

Support for Resolution with Criticism of Government

Despite criticisms of how the crisis was managed, parties including Congress and TMC supported the resolution.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said his party backs the resolution but wants immediate efforts to restore order. “End insurgency, restore peace and stability, promote dialogue, promote inclusivity,” Tharoor urged.

TMC’s Sayani Ghosh also endorsed the resolution but emphasized the need for quicker action towards peace.

Government Claims Progress in Restoring Peace

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, responding to the debate, stated that the situation in Manipur had stabilized with no violence reported in the past four months.

Shah added, “Talks are ongoing with both Meitei and Kuki communities for a peaceful solution. The government is taking all possible steps to ensure peace returns.”

He also acknowledged that while violence had stopped, the continued displacement of people meant the situation was not yet fully satisfactory.

Late-Night Vote Confirms President’s Rule

The resolution, titled ‘Consideration on the Proclamation issued by the President on the 13th February 2025 under article 356 (1) of the Constitution in relation to the State of Manipur’, was passed by voice vote around 2 am.
