Latest on the 8th Pay Commission News: The Government of India approved the 8th Pay Commission during a cabinet meeting on January 16, 2025. It was presided over by Prime Minister Modi. There was a general expectation from the public that the Government would at least make an announcement regarding the names of the commission members by the beginning of April, but that did not happen. Even when this information came to the public domain, there was no official order passed, commission functioning and appointment did see progress on them.
Guidelines on the Appointment of the 8th Pay Commission.
According to the terms of the latest government directive regarding these positions, the Commission is administratively responsible for the 8th Pay Commission under the direction of the DOPT. These guidelines will be refreshingly set through standing orders from time to time. To quote, the Ministrys’ Expenditure Department in the Finance ministry is reported to be intending to appoint thirty-five (35) positions in the eighth pay commission on contract.
Implementation Timeline Expectations
The commission's composition does seem to be moving towards a conclusion which indicates that the government is working to complete the commission's composition. The 8th Pay Commission will be set up, and afterwards will submit recommendations to the government, after which a decision concerning implementation will be made.
In any case, the 8th Pay Commission is expected to come into force on January 1, 2026. Some delaying reports from the media, however, suggests that it may in fact be 2027. The government, however, does seem inclined to provide salary increments as arrears commencing from the 1st of January, 2026 in the event that these delays happen.
