Comedian Kunal Kamra issued his first public response following the controversy around his comment on Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) late Monday, Kamra emphasized that freedom of expression should not be restricted to praising those in power. He stood firm on his right to satirize public figures and made it clear that he would not apologize for his remark.

Kamra added that he is willing to cooperate with law enforcement regarding any legal proceedings.

Studio Attacked Following Kamra’s Comment

Soon after his remark went viral, members of the Shiv Sena vandalized the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai, where Kamra had recorded his performance. The club has since announced a temporary shutdown. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against Kamra in relation to the controversy.

“A Stage Should Not Be Held Accountable”

Reacting to the incident, Kamra stated that performance venues merely serve as platforms for entertainment and are not responsible for the content shared on stage. He asserted that neither the venue nor any political organization has control over his material. According to Kamra, attacking a comedian’s content is irrational and unjustified.

Kamra on Political Threats and Freedom of Speech

Addressing threats from political leaders, Kamra reiterated that the freedom of speech includes the right to criticize and joke about those in power. He criticized the media for promoting a one-sided narrative and said intolerance toward satire does not invalidate his rights. He argued that making jokes about politicians is not unlawful.

Will Legal Action Be Equal for All?

Kamra expressed readiness to cooperate with police and judicial authorities. However, he questioned whether the law would apply equally to those who vandalized the venue. He also pointed out that parts of the Habitat club were demolished by BMC officials without any formal notice.

Kamra’s Sarcastic Remark on Future Shows

In a satirical comment, Kamra said he might choose a structurally weak location like Mumbai’s Elphinstone Bridge for his next show—referencing the quick demolition of his current venue.

Kamra Addresses Personal Harassment

Speaking about harassment from unknown callers and leaked phone numbers, Kamra responded that his voicemail now plays a song that most of his critics dislike, turning their own calls into a joke.

Background of the Controversy

The controversy began when Kamra, during a stand-up performance, mocked Eknath Shinde for switching political sides and labeled him a "traitor." His remarks angered Shiv Sena supporters, leading to an attack on the comedy studio.
