Brace yourselves, Jharkhand! The Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a critical weather warning for the state, predicting a significant change in atmospheric conditions over the next four days. Residents are advised to stay indoors as heavy rainfall, destructive hailstorms, and dangerous lightning strikes are expected to lash several districts.

IMD Issues Yellow and Orange Alerts

The Ranchi Meteorological Centre has raised alarms across the state, specifically highlighting a "Yellow Alert" for most regions and a more severe "Orange Alert" for specific pockets. A western disturbance combined with a cyclonic circulation over the region is the primary driver behind this sudden weather shift.

Key Areas Affected: Districts like Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Bokaro, and Hazaribagh are likely to see the maximum impact.

Wind Speeds: Expect gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 km/h, which could lead to power outages and uprooted trees.

The Danger of Hailstorms and Lightning

Unlike regular monsoon showers, these pre-monsoon activities carry a high risk of hailstorms. Farmers have been warned to protect standing crops, as hailstones can cause extensive damage to fruits and vegetables.

Furthermore, the IMD has emphasized the danger of lightning strikes. Jharkhand is statistically prone to lightning-related casualties, and the department has urged people not to take shelter under trees or near electric poles during the storm.

Temperature Drop: Relief from Heatwave?

While the storm brings safety concerns, it also offers a much-needed respite from the scorching heat. Temperatures across Jharkhand are expected to drop by 3°C to 5°C over the next 48 hours. However, the high humidity levels following the rain might cause temporary discomfort once the skies clear.

Safety Guidelines for Residents

To stay safe during this four-day alert period, the administration has issued the following advisories:

Stay Indoors: Avoid unnecessary travel during the evening hours when storm activity is at its peak.

Unplug Electronics: Protect your appliances from power surges caused by lightning.

Farmer Advisory: If possible, harvest ready crops immediately or cover them with anti-hail nets.

Avoid Water Bodies: Stay away from rivers and ponds during heavy downpours to avoid flash flood risks.
