For the International Women’s Day in 2025, India continues to support various government schemes at the state as well as national levels. Some Important yojanas include Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. This was started in 2015 with the aim to improve the child sex ratio. Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana has profoundly assisted poor families by giving them over 8 crore LPG connections from the year 2016, there by improving the standard of living of the women folk in the families.

Other important yojana include Mission Indradhanush, Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, Delhi’s Mahila Samriddhi Scheme, etc. These spells the commitment of India to women safety and empowerment throughout the nation.

National Schemes for Women's Empowerment

The Indian government has launched several schemes which have been helpful for the women across the nation. The following are some of the initiatives.

1. Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP)

Objective: To improve the child sex ratio and promote daughters’ education.

Feature: It contains Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) which enables parents to open a bank account in the name of their newly born daughter.

2. Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY)

objective: Financial assistance to pregnant and lactating mothers.

3. Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)

Objective: Provision of free LPG gas connections to women and poor families.

Achievement: The goal of providing 8 crore new gas connections was accomplished well ahead of the timeline in 2019. (as per tribuneindia)

4. Mission Indradhanush

Objective: Immunization of pregnant women and children was provided in full.

Impact: Helps reduce the death rate amongst mothers and children.

5. Kishori Shakti Yojana

Objective: To enhance the health, nutrition, and other life skills of adolescent girls.

Focus: Assists girls aged between 11 and 18 years with education and vocational training.

6. Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana (PMMY)

Objective: Business loans are given without any collateral or guarantees, including women-owned ventures.

Update: In the 2024-25 budget, the maximum loan limit was raised to ₹20 Lakhs. (as per pib.gov.in)

7. Stand-Up India Mission

Objective: To fund entrepreneurial ventures started by women, SC, and ST candidates.

Benefit: Up to 75% of total project cost is provided. (as per kviconline)

International Women’s Day 2025: State-wise initiatives for women's empowerment

The Indian government has made an attempt to empower women throughout the country by launching state-wise schemes. Here are a few of them:

Maharashtra: The government provides assistance to women in seeking employment and educational opportunities. Vocational training and entrepreneurial assistance is offered to motivate women to establish their businesses.

Tamil Nadu: fails to capitalize on its impressive statistics on female literacy with several initiatives to steadily improve the overall female entrepreneurial spirit such as the loan and training scheme under the Tamil Nadu Women's Development Corporation.  

 Kerala: women are aided towards self-sufficiency through the self-help groups provided by the Kudumbashree program.  

Similar to programs offered in other states, Uttar Pradesh has the Mission Shakti which helps provide women the proper legal assistance and the safe space needed to escape domestic violence.

24x7 Helpline Daun: Any woman, in any distress can call the toll-free number 181 for help in all states and Union Territories.  

Integration of domestic violence: Mediation services are offered by Prohibition cum Protection Officers to the women who suffer from domestic violence.  

Leaving no scope for added conflict, these policies display proof of India’s powerful stance in support of women as they celebrate International Women’s Day in 2025. The nation has taken important steps to achieving gender parity by focusing on improving education, healthcare, fostering economic independence, and offering protective legal frameworks.
