Suspense crime, Digital Desk : The economic repercussions that India is imposing on Turkey escalated further after Ankara’s assistance to Pakistan post Pahalgam terror attack and India’s Operation Sindoor counter response. This has evolved from online protests using the phrase ‘boycott Turkey’ into physical protests across the country. Even traders and consumers in Udaipur, all the way to Pune, have begun consciously avoiding purchasing Turkish products, stating that the interests of the country should come before trade.
The Marble Industry of Udaipur is Leading the Protests
Udaipur, the capital of Marble in India has significantly decreased Turkish exports. The Udaipur Marble Processors Association has called for a complete ban on Turkish marble imports, claiming a severe loss in Turkish exports. This decision came after reports surfaced suggesting Pakistan used Asigard Songar drones manufactured in Turkey during border tensions.
Surana, the president of the association stated that a letter has been sent to the Prime Minister’s Office demanding an immediate halt to Turkish marble trade, claiming the trade does not benefit the country’s interests. The shocking fact that India buys approximately 14 to 18 lakh tonnes of imported marble worth 2500 to 3000 crores annually puts India at the losing end. Trade cannot be bigger than the nation.
Turkish Apples Banned From Indian Markets
With marble, staggering quantities of Turkish apples are pulled off the shelves from fruit shops in the large Indian cities. According to a report in The Times of India, apple traders in Pune and Mumbai and areas further afield have begun to replace Turkish produce with apples from Iran, the United States (Washington), New Zealand, and even Indian states Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
“Turkish apples used to yield seasonal profits of ₹1,000–1,200 crore, but now there is no demand at all. This isn't just business—this is a matter of Zindabad (long live) India)—we are blockading their economy,” commented Suyog Zende, an APMC Market pune trader.
Prices are increasing—and so are the consequences of business interruption. Retail apple prices jumped by ₹20–30, while larger packs are facing larger price increases—a hundred to three hundred rupees. Traditionally, Kashmiri supply disruptions and India Pakistan tensions add serious fuel to the Viennese heavy rain fires, slicing up the bread gets.
Awakening Remnants of National Sentiments
The initiative replicates earlier boycotts that were preceded by the Uri and Galwan clashes. Hitesh Patel, general secretary of the Udaipur Marble Association, remarked, “It is India’s stamp of authority to the world that we will not tolerate any nation that endorses terrorism.”
Restrictions Are Now Further Proposed by Other Groups
Other trading associations are now banding together to lobby for the ban to extend beyond apples and marble. There is a growing movement to completely remove all forms of commerce with Turkey, indicating a deeper realignment towards economic protectionism fueled by geopolitical tensions.
