“India requires data sovereignty on account of its demographics and smartphone users. The government should also step in to allocate scarce resources towards AI development because there are no major private players willing to fund heavy AI projects,” offered Sanjeev Bikhchandani, founder and executive vice chairman of Info Edge (India) Ltd. Bikhchandani emphasized that the local data should be utilized in a manner where it is beneficial to the country while also ensuring domestic companies own the AI systems that were developed using Indian data.
“This ownership must be established within the next 2-3 years,” he posted on X. His comments stemmed from a podcast discussion with NatStrat, which is an independent non-profit center for strategic and security issues. Bikhchandani contended that artificial intelligence development requires very few (he referred to as “a small number”) highly qualified engineers as opposed to the world’s workforces. According to him, ChatGPT was created by merely “a handful of engineers.” The co-founder of Ashoka University also acknowledged that primary tech development does need jet set resources, but secondary work that follows primary work does demand bigger squads. Bigger role for the government Bikhchandani pointed out that there are few private businesses willing to take the associated risks to invest in significant AI projects, thus, “sovereign AIl efforts are imperative for India.”
He observed that without adequate funding for locally produced AI, India “risks missing the bus” on thier “transformative technologies”.
Bikhchandani was on with three separate things India needs to do: spend between 10 and 30 years on AI development infulstructure put in place, take Indian LLMs as a Development project, like a dam project, and put AI Infrastructure in place as was done with digital payments.
