Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Following New Delhi's alleged exploitation of the Indus Waters Treaty as a “weapon of war,” India vigorously rebutted Pakistan’s accusations at the United Nations. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, mentioned that Pakistan’s support for cross-border terrorism was the reason for the suspension.
India Highlights Terro Tally and Latest Attack
The Indian Ambassador highlighted the fact that over 20,000 Indian citizens have become victims of terrorism in the last 40 years. Ambassador Harish also blasted the Pakistani-sponsored terror infrastructure as he quoted the recent attack in Pahalgam, where 26 tourists were brutally gunned down.
Pakistan Accused of Violating Treaty’s Spirit
The ambassador reminded the assembly of the fact that the 1960 treaty was based on bilateral cooperation. He charged Pakistan with violating spirit of the treaty with waging wars and terrorism. “India very responsibly has always acted as an upper riparian state,” he said.
Changes in Global Context Call for Treaty Revision
The Indian ambassador sharled to bring attention to the fact that the treaty has not been revised since its inception, which is a dire need due to the drastic alterations that have taken place after this document was signed. In his opinion, new security challenges, increased demand for power, and climate change fundamentally alter the world order and the treaty does not adapt to current realities.
Pakistan Blocking Dam Safety Upgrades
Pakistan has blocked several of India’s attempts to modernize older dam infrastructure, which is permitted under the treaty, utilizing more advanced technologies for safety and water use.
India’s Repeated Requests for Dialogue Rejected
India has, in the last few years, repeatedly extended an invitation to Pakistan to renegotiate some of the terms of the treaty. Pakistan has continued to deny each one of these proposals while—and in the process—denying India the use of several of its legal rights from the concord agreement.
India Links Suspension to Terror Support
As a result, Harish, cites that India was left with no option but to put a hold on the treaty due to the ongoing terrorist activities emanating from Pakistan. “It will be put in cold storage until Pakistan decisively and demonstrably ends its acts of terror,” he noted.
Operation Sindoor in Response to Pahalgam Attack
After the terror attack in the Pahalgam region of Jammu and Kashmir, India pre-emptively launched the operation on May 7, after the attack. It had targeted terror installations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir which were later confirmed to have cross-border funding.
