Suspense crime, Digital Desk : India's primary electrical trade with Bangladesh continues to persevere even during difficult trade relations as exports remain. There are always power purchase agreements in place, that guarantee at least some form of supply, even if some restrictions are applicable during payment delays.
Daily Power Exported by Indian Power Firms is 2.4 GW
With all contributing sources, India was able to export 2.4 GW of electrical power to Bangladesh on May 19. Adani Power, NTPC, SEIL Energy India, PTC, and Powergrid Corporation were among the contributors. The contribution was about 1.42 GW from Adani Power's thermal plant in Godda, Jharkhand which stands at nearly 60 percent.
Bangladesh’s Continues to Face Payment Issues
The political unrest in Bangladesh that started last August has severely impacted its ability to pay electricity invoices. Adani Power's CFO disclosed recently that the country currently owes $900 million unpaid, having paid $1.2 billion out of the total $2 billion. Despite this, there’s still uninterrupted full supply.
India Permits Power Exchange Between Nepal and Bangladesh
In what could be termed as a first for the region, public electricity imports from Nepal using India's national power grid started in November 2024. This comes after a tripartite buy sell deal signed in October between NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam India, Nepal Electricity Authority, and Bangladesh Power Development Board.
Nepal and India had previously engaged in power trading, but the Korea Electric Power Corporation had to negotiate a deal with Bangladesh to link its power grid to India's for this project to move forward.
