India's criticism toward United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk, regarding talking about Kashmir and Manipur in his global update, has been very harsh for comments they consider “unfounded and baseless”.

India’s Ambassador Arindam Bagchi, the Permanent Representative at the UN, termed the comments made by Turk’s aide as “cherry picking” phenomena which is complete lack of situational awareness.

Let me start by saying that as a consequence of India being mentioned by name, the country dubbed as the world’s greatest democracy operates as an active, multicultural, and energetic society. The reality bases must be held to a much higher standard. Bagchi further warned that placing such misplaced concerns about us will block out the voice of India which time and time proves such things as being absurd, ANI news agency directed. Reports stated today that Bagchi made the comments during his 58th session speech of Human Rights Council In Geneva.

These comments were made after Mr. Turk's “updates,” during which he expressed concern regarding the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and also in Manipur after the 58th session of Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Turk had issued a call for increased focus on violence and displacements in Manipur. “I also call for steps to be taken to address violence and displacement in Manipur, on the basis of dialogue, peacebuilding, and human rights,” he had said. While speaking, the UN’s human rights chief also said his concerns about “the use of restrictive laws and harassment against human rights defenders and independent journalists,” which he argued have led to “arbitrary detention and a reduced civic space, including in Kashmir,” were noted.

“India’s democracy and institutions have been its unmatched advantage, facilitating the country’s pluralism and growth. Democracy needs a citizen’s active presence and engagement at all societal levels,” Turk said.

In mentioning a range of Ukraine and Gaza, to even lesser invoked Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and the US, there was no mention of Pakistan in the context of conflict and post conflict country which many like to assume.

Bagchi said, “At a broader level, we have issues with the oversimplifications that the global update seemingly provides, border but loose oversimplified frameworks and remarks, nonsensical phraseology, and obvious selection of favorable scenarios.”

Bagchi stated, “The High Commissioner has felt somewhat of a discomfort, but plausibly addressing it will take the Office of the High Commissioner having to face some harsh realities.”
