In a historic achievement, India has produced 1 billion tonnes of coal, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s journey towards energy security and self-reliance. The feat was lauded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who shared his message on X (formerly Twitter):

“A Proud Moment for India! Crossing the monumental milestone of 1 Billion tonnes of coal production is a remarkable achievement, highlighting our commitment to energy security, economic growth and self-reliance.”

Coal: Still a Backbone of India’s Energy Sector

According to official data from the Ministry of Coal, coal remains a dominant energy source in India, contributing nearly 55% to the country’s energy mix. India is home to the fifth-largest coal reserves in the world and ranks as the second-largest coal consumer globally.

This milestone underlines coal’s crucial role in sustaining industrial activity, powering infrastructure, and driving economic progress.

Leadership Recognition and Sectoral Support

Union Minister for Coal and Mines G Kishan Reddy also acknowledged the achievement, stating:

“With cutting-edge technologies and efficient methods, we’ve not only increased production but also ensured sustainable and responsible mining. This achievement will fuel our increasing power demands, drive economic growth, and ensure a brighter future for every Indian.”

He credited the progress to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Modi, and praised the workforce in the coal sector as the backbone of India's energy strategy.

A Step Toward Global Energy Leadership

The government’s focus on technological innovation and sustainable practices in mining has helped boost coal production while minimizing environmental impact. The milestone also aligns with India’s ambition to become a global energy leader, balancing traditional energy sources with emerging clean energy initiatives.
