The day-night test match being played between India and Australia in Adelaide saw tremendous batting from the host team on the second day. On the second day, Marnush Labuschagne and Nathan Maxwini started playing ahead of the first day’s score of 86/1. Maxwini may have returned to the pavilion on a score of 39 runs, but Marnush Labuschagne took a breather only after completing his half-century. Australia’s team took an 11-run lead over India by taking the score to 191 runs for four wickets in their first innings in the first session. After this, with Travis Head’s aggressive century, Australia scored 332 runs for eight wickets till the tea break and took a big lead of 152 runs over India.

Head’s Century Strengthens Australia.

Head, who opened his account with a brilliant four against Jasprit Bumrah on the second day, completed his eighth century of Test career in 111 balls. However, he was given a reprieve by Mohammad Siraj by dropping a catch on Ashwin’s ball at a score of 76 runs. Taking advantage of this, Head played an innings of 140 runs in which he hit 17 fours and 4 brilliant sixes. Head became the victim of Mohammad Siraj. Siraj bowled him out with a yorker and showed him the way to the pavilion. After this, Australia’s first innings was reduced to a score of 337 runs. In this way, Australia managed to gain a lead of 157 runs over India in the first innings itself.

Not a good sign for India

This lead of Australia can become a big threat for India because,e in the 22-day-night test matches played before this match, it has been seen very rarely that a team has been able to win after falling behind in the first innings. In the 22-day-night test matches played so far, it has happened only twice that a team has lost after gaining a lead in the first innings. That means victory looks very difficult for India from here.

The last time this was seen was 4 years ago when Australia won the Adelaide Test (Day-Night Test) played in 2020 against India despite losing the lead in the first innings. At the same time, in the year 2018, West Indies had to face defeat after gaining the lead in the first innings against Sri Lanka in the Day-Night Test match.

Only twice have teams managed to win a day-night Test after losing a lead in the first innings

  • 50 runs- Sri Lanka vs West Indies, Bridgetown 2018
  • 53 runs- Australia vs India, Adelaide 2020
