UK aerospace manufacturer HR Smith Group has dismissed allegations made by The New York Times that it was involved in transferring sensitive technology to a Russian arms agency via India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL). The company labeled the report as “entirely false” and “baseless.”

India Also Refutes Report, Citing Compliance with Trade Norms

Indian government sources also denied the claims, stating HAL has consistently complied with strategic trade control norms and end-user obligations. “The said report is factually incorrect and misleading,” an official told ANI. “It attempts to distort facts to fit a political narrative.”

The government further emphasized India's robust legal and regulatory systems governing strategic trade, ensuring strict adherence to international obligations for overseas commercial activities.

NYT Report Sparks Diplomatic Sensitivity

The NYT report alleged that HAL received equipment from HR Smith Group and later transferred parts bearing identical product codes to Russian defense agencies. It also cited documents showing nearly $2 million worth of sensitive components, including transmitters and cockpit systems, reaching a Moscow-linked weapons supplier between 2023 and 2024.

The article referred to a December 2023 UK government “red alert” urging businesses to prevent unauthorized redirection of sensitive exports to Russia via intermediaries.

Western Sanctions and India’s Neutral Stance

These developments come amid ongoing Western sanctions on Russian defense entities following the Ukraine conflict that began in February 2022. While the U.S. and most European nations have imposed strict restrictions, India has taken a neutral diplomatic position, advocating for dialogue and peaceful resolution.

Critics have raised concerns over potential gaps in sanctions enforcement, while Indian authorities continue to assert full compliance with international frameworks.
