In a clear and firm response, India has told Turkey to back off after President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan brought up the Kashmir issue at the United Nations General Assembly. New Delhi's message was simple: Kashmir is our business, and we don't need anyone else getting involved
During his address at the UN, President Erdoğan suggested that the long-standing Kashmir dispute should be resolved through dialogue, citing UN resolutions. He also noted that Turkey was pleased with the current ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
However, India was not having any of it. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) swiftly issued a statement calling the remarks "objectionable" and "unwarranted.MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal made it crystal clear that India's position on Jammu and Kashmir hasn't changed. "Our stand on the Kashmir issue is very clear," he said, emphasizing that it's an internal matter for India and a bilateral issue to be resolved with Pakistan, with no room for a third party.
India's response didn't stop there. The spokesperson pointed out that if Turkey is concerned about the region, it should focus on the root cause of the problem: cross-border terrorism. He stated that the biggest threat to the people of Jammu and Kashmir is terrorism coming from across the border, a direct shot at Pakistan's role in the region This isn't the first time Erdoğan has made such comments, having done so before, only to be met with a similar sharp response from India.
In a sharp diplomatic move, India also subtly brought up one of Turkey's own long-standing disputes. The MEA spokesperson mentioned that India's External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, had recently met with his counterpart from Cyprus. During the meeting, India reaffirmed its support for a UN-based resolution to the Cyprus issue—a very sensitive topic for Turkey, which invaded the northern part of the island in 1974.The unspoken message was clear: those with their own unresolved territorial conflicts should not be lecturing others.
New Delhi has lodged a strong protest with the Turkish ambassador, making its stance official. The swift and strong reaction shows India's resolve to handle its sovereign matters without any outside interference.
