There was a lot of uproar in the winter session of Parliament on Friday as well. First, the MPs of opposition parties protested on the issue of Gautam Adani and the Constitution. The opposition MPs arrived wearing black masks. After this, the Chairman of Rajya Sabha Jagdeep Dhankhar said that a bundle of notes had been found on a seat. This bundle was found by the sweepers on seat number 222, which has been allotted to Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi. After this, there was a lot of uproar in the House. The Chairman said that one bundle is of 500 rupee notes and it seems that there are 100 notes in it. He also said that it is not clear whether the notes are real or fake.
Congress says that the Speaker should not have disclosed on whose seat the money was found. The Speaker should order an investigation on this matter and get to the bottom of the matter. Congress said that the Speaker can get the investigation done by NIA or Delhi Police or any other agency as per his wish. Opposition leaders also alleged that the government has deliberately created the story of notes to divert everyone’s attention from the Adani issue. At the same time, Leader of the House JP Nadda claimed that the opposition shows seriousness on some issues while trying to cover up other issues.
What did Abhishek Manu Singhvi say?
Senior advocate and Congress Rajya Sabha MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, “I am surprised, I have never heard of such a thing. I went to the House at 12:57 pm on Thursday and the proceedings were adjourned at one o’clock. Then I had lunch with Ayodhya Rami Reddy (Rajya Sabha member) in the canteen and then left the Parliament House at 1:30 pm.” He said that he stayed inside the House for three minutes and in the canteen for half an hour. The senior advocate said that it is ridiculous to do politics on such matters. Later, he posted on the social media platform ‘X’ saying that whenever he goes to the House, he has only one note of Rs 500.
What are the rules?
Even though all the leaders are creating a ruckus over finding a bundle of notes, there is no rule regarding this. Any MP can enter the House with as much money as he wants. There are food shops and banks inside the Parliament building. Many leaders keep withdrawing money from this bank. In such a situation, carrying notes inside the Parliament is not against the rules. However, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said, “Today is the digital era and no one walks around with so many notes. This should be investigated.” Chairman Dhankhar also expressed surprise that no one claimed this money. He said that he expected that someone would claim these notes, but no one has claimed them yet. He said, “Does this reflect the state of the economy in which people can forget (the bundle of notes).”
When BJP leaders threw a bundle of notes
The UPA government led by Manmohan Singh had signed a nuclear deal with the US and angry with this, the Left parties withdrew support from the UPA government. A confidence motion was presented in the House and on the same day, three BJP MPs – Ashok Argal, Faggan Singh Kulaste ,and Mahavir Bhagora – arrived in the Lok Sabha with Rs 1 crore. All three threw notes inside the House and said that the then-general secretary of the Samajwadi Party Amar Singh and Ahmed Patel of the Congress had offered them money to vote in support of the confidence motion. Leader of the Opposition LK Advani had said that the MPs were lured with Rs 3 crore each. Rs 1 crore was given first and the rest of the amount was assured to be given later. However, Amar Singh and Ahmed Patel rejected the allegations. On the complaint of Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, the Delhi Police had registered a case in this matter.
