Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Your gut is home to trillions of microscopic organisms crucial to digestion, energy reserves, inflammation, and even appetite. These microbes, known as gut microbiota, are now being appreciated by physicians as foundational elements of overall health and weight control.
Obesity and Gut Bacteria: What’s the Link?
Studies show that people with obesity have different gut bacteria compared to those who are lean.
Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala, Director of Surgery at Reliance Foundation Hospital, stresses, “The delicate interplay of two types of gut bacteria, Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes, tends to correlate with their relative abundance within your microbiota and has a staggering impact on your health.”
He adds that the more potent Firmicutes tend to dominate, the more energy will be gained from food, leading to possible weight gain.
The Role of Short Chain Fatty Acids (SCFAs)
Dietary fibers are converted into short-chain fatty acids, SCFAs, by gut bacteria. Butyrate and propionate are examples of SCFAs and they are metabolically invaluable for these reasons:
Lower inflammation in the body
Increase the body’s responsiveness to insulin
Control appetite by communicating with the brain
Dysbiosis: When Gut Balance Breaks Down
An unbalanced gut flora can be detrimental and is known as dysbiosis. Negative bacteria can create lipopolysaccharides or LPS which can give rise to;
Cardiovascular inflammation
Insulin unresponsiveness
Hunger disruption
This scenario worsens fat burial and metabolic disorders.
Chronic stress, lack of sleep, and poor diets have damaging effects on metabolic conditions due to their impact on gut bacteria. Because of this, Dr. Lakdawala addresses Chronic Stress Syndrome.
In more positive light, gut health balance can be achieved by:
- Prebiotics: These are beneficial bacteria and are fed by non digestible fibers.
- Probiotics: These are live stand bacteria that further enhance microbial balance.
- Fermented foods: These natural additives like yogurt, kefir, and kimchi are proven probiotic sources.
Caring about gut health also reflects in effective weight loss regimes.
“Integrating gut health with a sensible diet and physical exercise optimizes metabolic outcomes,” states Dr. Lakdawala. “Similarly, it's not only about how many calories to restrict while, but how to nurture the gut's microbiome.”
