Dr Karishma Jaradi, Head Dental Surgeon at Dentzz Dental said that dry mouth is a condition that warrants attention. “It’s a warning sign that your body needs water,” further adding that if not treated, dry mouth can lead to bad breath, cavities, and even gum diseases.

As stated above, saliva is very important for oral hygiene. The list includes neutralizing acid, getting rid of food particles and providing minerals to the teeth. When the body doesn't get enough water, the mouth becomes dry and devoid of moisture.
Dr Jaradi adds “If left untreated, these problems may result in severe complications such as gingivitis, periodontitis, or even oral thrush."

Pay attention to these signs which indicate low saliva levels:
Lips may crack or tongue sores may form
Bad breath will become more persistent
Food tastes will be bitter, bland, or metallic
Slime-like saliva that is thick or sticky
Dr. Jaradi elaborates that these signs can be corrected with some slight changes to everyday behaviors.
Steps to Ensure Your Oral Health is In Good Shape During Summer
Increase Water Intake
If not actively engaging in physical activity or spending time in overly hot regions, aim for at least two liters of water per day. Including juicy fruits and vegetables such as cucumbers, tomatoes, and watermelons will help boost fluids. Limit intake of alcohol, sugary drinks, or caffeine since these tend to dry out the mouth.
Avoid Sucking on Hard Candy
Unless your dentist recommends using mouth sprays or saliva substitutes for temporary relief, you should avoid using sugary lozenges or gum.
Breathe Through your Nose
These will help retain moisture in the face. A humidifier, decongestant or saline sprays can help maintain moisture.
Do Oral Hygiene Daily
It is crucial that you brush and floss daily to help reduce plaque build up as well as bacteria growth which is more active when the mouth is dry.
