A recent cross-sectional study conducted in Western India by medical researchers Ekant Surendra Gupta, Sanket Pranjivan Sheth, and Jayshree Deepak Ganjawale has brought a startling health concern to light regarding the widespread use of Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purifiers. While millions of households rely on RO systems to filter contaminants and ensure safe drinking water, the study of 250 participants revealed a striking correlation: approximately 50.6 percent of individuals who regularly consumed RO water suffered from vitamin B12 deficiency, compared to only 17.5 percent of those drinking water from alternative sources like borewells, municipal taps, or standard filters. Although researchers note that the data currently demonstrates an association rather than direct causation, the findings have sparked intense debate among health experts regarding how heavy water purification might impact nutrient absorption and gut health.

Understanding Vitamin B12 Importance, Deficiency Symptoms

Vitamin B12 is an indispensable nutrient responsible for producing red blood cells, maintaining a healthy nervous system, synthesizing DNA, and sustaining daily energy levels. When B12 levels plummet, individuals frequently experience severe fatigue, shortness of breath, tingling or numbness in the fingers and toes, brain fog, and recurring mouth ulcers, with strict vegetarians and older adults facing the highest risk. Despite the study's eye-opening statistics, doctors emphasize that there is no need to panic or dismantle home RO systems, especially in areas dealing with high TDS levels or contaminated groundwater where purification prevents waterborne diseases. Instead, health experts recommend scheduling annual B12 screenings, enriching diets with dairy, yogurt, cheese, and nutrient-dense foods, and consulting a physician for appropriate supplementation if deficiencies are detected.
