Suspense crime, Digital Desk : An Indian-origin man in Singapore has been handed a severe sentence of jail time and caning for his involvement in a brutal, armed riot that left an innocent man with horrific injuries. The case underscores the city-state's famously strict, zero-tolerance approach to public violence.

Asvain Pachan Pillai Sukumaran, 30, was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison and will also receive nine strokes of the cane. He pleaded guilty to one charge of rioting while armed with a deadly weapon.

The court heard that the violent incident, which occurred in 2021, was a premeditated act of gang-related revenge. Sukumaran was part of a 14-member group on the hunt for members of a rival gang. Armed with lethal weapons including a chopper, a knuckleduster, and a karambit knife, they set upon a group of four men.

In a tragic case of mistaken identity, the victims were not the intended rival gang members. They were innocent individuals who were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sukumaran, who was armed with a knuckleduster, actively participated in the attack, punching one of the victims repeatedly. The vicious assault left one man with multiple facial fractures and deep cuts.

The prosecution pushed for a harsh penalty, arguing that such a brazen and brutal attack in a public place must be met with a sentence that serves as a powerful deterrent to others.

The sentence handed down to Sukumaran reflects Singapore's unwavering commitment to maintaining public order and safety, sending a clear message that gang-related violence will be met with the full and severe force of the law.
