Meaning and Origin of Garudasana

The Eagle Pose is directly inspired by an Indian mythical creature called Garuda. Garuda is often referred to as the king of birds, he is often depicted in art as an eagle. While performing this pose, one can automatically come to the conclusion of the English counterpart name. In English, it is called Eagle Pose.

Step-by-step Procedure of Mastering Garudasana

Start with the standing mountain pose, also known as tadasana. Stand straight with your feet together and let your arms rest by your upper legs.

Lift your left leg and wrap it around the right leg such that the left thigh crosses the right.

Bend your elbows and cross your left arm over the right arm.

Try to bring both palms into prayer position or “Namaste Mudra”.

Maintain the pose while breathing evenly, concentrating on your balance and structure.

Slowly go back to the original position and switch sides.

Complete 3 to 5 sets for optimum effectiveness.  

Cautions for Garudasana

Best to be avoided if you suffer from:  

Hypotension (Low blood pressure)  

Knee Injuries

Chronic pain in joints
