The dream of a better life abroad often turns into a nightmare for many young Punjabis, and currently, several are living that reality in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Stranded without valid documents, stuck in legal tangles, or misled by unscrupulous agents, these youngsters have been pleading for a way back home.
In a significant development, Amritsar MP Gurjit Singh Aujla has officially taken charge of the situation, launching a mission to ensure their safe return to Punjab.
What’s Happening in the UAE?
For months, reports have surfaced of Punjabi youth living in dire conditions in various parts of the UAE. Many went there on "visitor visas" promised by agents who claimed they would be converted into "work permits." Instead, they found themselves:
Without Passports: Often seized by employers or agents.
Overstaying Visas: Leading to massive fines that they cannot afford to pay.
Unemployed and Homeless: Many are surviving on the charity of local Gurdwaras and NGO groups like 'Sarbat Da Bhala.'
Aujla’s Diplomatic Push
MP Gurjit Singh Aujla recently met with high-ranking officials and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to fast-track the repatriation process. He has been in direct contact with the Indian Consulate in Dubai to coordinate "Emergency Certificates" for those who have lost their travel documents.
"Our priority is to bring them back before the legal situation gets even more complicated," Aujla stated. He also emphasized that the Indian government is working with UAE authorities to possibly waive off the heavy overstay fines for those who were genuinely duped.
The Crackdown on "Fake Agents"
Beyond just bringing the youth back, Aujla has called for a massive crackdown on the "travel agent mafia" operating in Punjab. He noted that while the government is helping the victims, the root cause—illegal recruitment—needs to be addressed with strict police action and canceled licenses for fraudulent agencies.
A Message to Families
This move has brought a wave of relief to many families in Amritsar and surrounding districts who haven't seen their sons in months or years. The MP’s office has set up a dedicated communication channel for families to submit details of their stranded relatives to help speed up the documentation.
