
Fresh violence erupted on Saturday in Dhulian of Samserganj block in Murshidabad district, a day after large-scale agitation over the Waqf (Amendment) Act froze several districts in West Bengal.
As per the preliminary accounts ADG (Law and Order) Jawed Shamim provided, one individual sustained a gunshot injury and claimed it could have been from the BSF fire, although he warning that ‘this happens to be speculative and under probe.’
“Right now these are too early to suggest anything and therefore, require verification,” remarked Shamim. “At the same time, one hundred and eighteen (118) persons have been arrested until now in the wake of the skirmishes.”
Massive Security Deployment as BSF Located Near Borders
Following aggressive unrest on Friday, the Border Security Force (BSF) was positioned to parts of Murshidabad which have a border with Bangladesh. Higher officials in the police department such as ADG and IG are handling operational supervision of the district.
“Specialised forces have been deployed to deal with further escalation, and Shamim confirmed.
DGP Instructs to Lower Temperature, Relays Not Speculation in Gossip
Addressing the public in Kolkata, the DGP Rajeev Kumar limited the dialogue to strongly condemn violence and assure prompt actions by the administration in his next statement anyway.
Mamata Banerjee: “We are not in support of This Law”
Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee elaborated on the states position on the Waqf (Amendment) Act:
“It's not us who framed the law, it’s the central government. They have issued the law. We have explained the position—we are not in favor of this law and it will not be enforced in West Bengal.”
Encouraged the general public to maintain calm, stating they should not get into political baiting.
BJP Asks For NIA Inquiry; Claims TMC Is Giving In To Political Pressure
Suvendu Adhikari, BJP’s Leader of Opposition, sent an appeal to Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw asking the NIA to investigate the destruction of railway assets combing the protests.
Adhikari called the violence a “premeditated act” of radical groups in a post on X, and branded it an assault on democracy.
State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar gave out the demand again for strict action to be taken in the abuse of law:
“When BJP comes to power, these things will not be tolerated and we will destroy such behavior in five minutes. The current administration is dealing with too much appeasement politics which is failing them.”
