The Film Employees Federation of Kerala accuses actor Shine Tom Chacko of egregious behavior, including substance abuse, and has allegedly given him a last opportunity to amend his ways. As per a report, actress Vincy Aloshious accused Chacko of inappropriate behavior with her during a film shoot, claiming he was under the influence of drugs at the time.
Abusive behavior in the film industry, according to several Part 3 students at the Kottayam campus of BSK’s Film School in India, has become the new norm. FEFKA General Secretary B unnikrishnan defended Chacko’s conduct, blatantly telling reporters that the actor’s talent is recognized, but there is a line, and repeated offenses will not be tolerated. “This approach must not be misinterpreted as a weakness,” he maintained.
Ongoing Industry Struggles and Reputational Damage
Continuing concerns with the decreasing productivity of the Malayalam Cinema were also shared by k Dr. Unnikrishnan. He stated that there is an observable decrease of around 45% in the production of movies in the last six months alone as corporate houses and producers are reluctant to fund and invest in an infamously known drug addicted industry.
There seemed to be no hope of these trends reversing as he claimed this could lead to a total halt in productions for the next few months if it continues this way. The perception of the industry’s association with substances is gravely damaging its credibility and jeopardizing its future sustainable growth.
Substance Abuse Allegations and Associated Legal Action
Shine Tom Chako’s developments include arrest, securing bail, and his involvement in a drug-related issue is underway. He escaped from a hotel room during a drug bust executed by the District Anti-Narcotic Special Action Force (DANSAF). He is currently undergoing prosecution for various clauses under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances NDPS and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita BNS acts.
Prior reports lodged by Vincy Aloshious indicate that Chako has engaged in inappropriate behavior during the shooting of an unfinished film Soothravakyam. She has not lodged any police complaints, but has sent a formal inter-office letter to the Film Chamber and Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) apprising them about the issue at hand.
Government Response, Alongside Responses From the Industry
The accusations have been admitted and acknowledged as serious by the government of Kerala. Both the State Police and the Excise department have taken control of and are supervising the situation. Correspondingly, FEFKA has advocated for AMMA to take real action explaining the need to stress current conditions, which makes executing film production challenging.
Separately But Relatedly, in another matter, Shine Tom Chacko was recently exonerated for a 2015 drug case due to lack of evidence perpetuated from the investigative processes utilized by the police.
