The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) launched the highly anticipated FASTag Annual Pass on August 15, 2025, coinciding with India’s 79th Independence Day. This innovative electronic toll collection system offers private vehicle owners, including cars, jeeps, and vans, an effortless and cost-effective way to travel on designated National Highways (NH) and National Expressways (NE) without paying toll charges for each trip.
The FASTag Annual Pass is valid for one year or up to 200 trips, whichever comes first. It comes at a fixed cost of Rs 3,000 for the base year 2025-2026. Eligible vehicle owners can purchase and activate the pass online through official platforms like the NHAI website or the Rajmarg Yatra app. Once payment and vehicle eligibility are verified, the pass activates within two hours on the registered FASTag.
It’s important to note that the pass only covers tolls on NHs and NEs managed by NHAI and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). Travel on expressways or state highways managed by local state authorities will still require regular FASTag toll payment. The pass is non-transferable and will deactivate if used on any vehicle other than the one it was originally registered with. Also, it functions only when properly affixed to the windshield of the registered vehicle.
Certain expressways are explicitly excluded from the FASTag Annual Pass scheme, including Yamuna Expressway, Dwarka Expressway, Purvanchal Expressway, Bundelkhand Expressway, Agra-Lucknow Expressway, Meerut Expressway, Samruddhi Mahamarg Expressway, Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway, Atal Setu, and Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway. Travel on these routes will attract standard FASTag charges.
With this landmark rollout, NHAI aims to simplify toll payments and reduce congestion at toll plazas by providing a seamless and cost-effective pass to frequent highway commuters. Users receive regular SMS updates about their pass usage to ensure transparency.
