Bollywood actress Taapsee Pannu's upcoming project has landed in hot water ahead of its digital premiere. While anticipation was high following the initial promotional rollouts, the makers of the upcoming film Gandhari now face serious legal and ethical hurdles following accusations of story plagiarism.
Plagiarism Allegations Surface Ahead of OTT Premiere
Recently, streaming platform Netflix unveiled the first-look poster of Gandhari, confirming its scheduled release date for September 3. However, excitement quickly turned into controversy following reports of a potential copyright dispute.
According to reports, Kalyan Bandi—an author and Central GST inspector who previously studied at IIT Madras—has alleged that the core storyline of Gandhari was copied from a narrative he wrote and officially registered back in 2019. Bandi further claimed that he had previously pitched the concept to Monica Shergill, a former Voot executive who currently serves as Vice President at Netflix. Citing these prior disclosures, legal notices were reportedly issued to the film's production team regarding the matter.
Writer's Team Refutes Claims
In response to the mounting allegations, representatives and the writing team of Gandhari writer Kanika Dhillon have firmly rejected all claims of copyright infringement. The team maintained that the script is an original creation independently conceptualized and penned by Dhillon. As the legal developments unfold, the focus remains on how the makers navigate these challenges leading up to the film's scheduled debut on Netflix.
