During the early 1990s, an image showing the actress seated alongside underworld gangster Dawood Ibrahim at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Dubai sent shockwaves through the Hindi film industry, casting a long shadow over her rising career. Addressing the speculation in an interview with news agency ANI, Mandakini clarified the circumstances surrounding the viral photograph, firmly denying any personal ties or specialized invitations from the fugitive.

Setting the record straight three decades later, Mandakini stated that public figures have no control over sensationalist reporting and that she had traveled to Dubai strictly for a professional entertainment show. Explaining that artists regularly encounter thousands of diverse individuals in large social settings, she emphasized that the gathering at the stadium included numerous attendees and was not an exclusive or private rendezvous. "We went there for a show. I wasn't invited by Dawood," the actress affirmed, adding that as an artist she interacted equally with everyone present without endorsing rumors circulating in the press.
