After a long and scorching wait, residents of Delhi and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR) finally woke up to the welcome sight and sound of heavy rain on Sunday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially declared the onset of the southwest monsoon over the capital, bringing much-needed relief from the oppressive heat that has plagued the city for weeks.
The monsoon's arrival, just a few days behind its usual date of June 27th, has dramatically changed the city's weather. The intense downpour, which started early in the morning, led to an immediate and significant drop in temperatures. The minimum temperature settled at 26.2 degrees Celsius, providing a cool break from the relentless heatwave.
While the rain was a cause for celebration for most, it also brought the city's perennial monsoon challenges. Reports of waterlogging quickly emerged from several low-lying areas across Delhi, Noida, and Ghaziabad, leading to traffic slowdowns and inconvenience for commuters.
Looking ahead, the relief is expected to continue. The IMD has issued a 'yellow alert' for the capital for the next several days, forecasting continued moderate to heavy showers. Forecasters predict that the monsoon will continue its advance, covering the remaining parts of Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab in the next two to three days. For now, the people of Delhi are simply enjoying the cool breeze and the fresh smell of rain after a long, hot summer.
