
Delhi High Court Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya has reportedly submitted a detailed report to Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna. The report is related to the alleged discovery of cash at the official residence of Justice Yashwant Varma.
The discovery occurred after a fire broke out at Justice Varma's Lutyens Delhi residence on the night of March 14, during the Holi festival, around 11:35 PM. The Delhi Fire Department responded promptly and extinguished the fire. During this intervention, a substantial amount of cash was allegedly found at the premises.
In-House Inquiry Initiated
Justice Upadhyaya began an internal inquiry into the incident and collected evidence and relevant information. His report was submitted on Friday. The Supreme Court stated that the in-house inquiry was already underway before the collegium meeting scheduled for March 20.
According to the Supreme Court’s statement, there is "misinformation and rumours" circulating regarding the incident. The Court emphasized that the inquiry and the proposal to transfer Justice Varma to the Allahabad High Court are separate matters.
Supreme Court Collegium's Role
The Supreme Court collegium, led by the Chief Justice of India along with the four senior-most judges, reviewed the situation during a meeting on March 20. The collegium then reached out to consultee judges from the top court and relevant high court chief justices, as well as Justice Varma himself.
