Intrafirm Relationships: In this day and age, it is vital to manage the professional and personal spheres, more so when both partners are in the same organization. There are some advantages to having your girlfriend or boyfriend at the same workplace, but this predicament also has its own set of issues. If care is not taken, then it can harm the profession and also the affectionate relationship at the same time.
Conduct yourself in this manner at the office
1. Distinction between personal and private life must be maintained.
There should be no confusion between these two realms, especially at the office. Overworking is often treated as a virtue, but there’s extreme talk that borders on discussing intimate details and even engaging in fondling. Do NOT indulge in these activities in the office setting. All work related talk MUST be finished before leaving the office, while personal activities should ONLY take place outside of work.
2. Refrain from Excessive Interaction with your Partner at your Place of Work
Taking this further, catering and gift giving or sharing among peers in the office is strictly prohibited. All actions that involve too much tenderness and gentleness, considering romantic love aspects, must be avoided while on work premises. This includes showing intimacy to senior colleagues or managers as it can harm your reputation.
3. Refrain from competitiveness and jealousy
When in a similar team or job role, do not come in with any form of competition or jealousy. Understand each other and assist in growing each other’s careers. When your partner gets a promotion or any appreciation, you should celebrate their success instead of feeling jealous.
4. Steer clear of rumors and gossip.
In the working environment, the people around you tend to spread rumors very easily. When your relationship becomes the center of office gossip, it may hurt both your professional as well as your partner’s professional life. Hence, maintain silence and do not talk much regarding the relationship.
5. Know the company policy.
Every company’s policies may differ slightly and some can be quite rigid as far as office romances and relationships go. Try and learn the policy to not get in trouble. If you have concerns, you should approach HR.
6. Leave all arguments out of the office.
Every couple has their fair share of disagreements, only be sure not to bring that petty drama into the workplace, as that has the potential to affect your work productivity as well as the mood in the office. In case of conflict, work on settling it outside of your workplace.
7. Continue to be professional when working in groups
In case you and your partner are in the same team, other peers should not have the feeling that you are being biased towards one another. Work in teams without favoritism and treat all colleagues with respect.
