In cricket, some moments just stick with you. This was one of them. During a high-stakes Asia Cup match, Afghanistan found themselves in deep trouble against Sri Lanka. With the scoreboard showing a dismal 79 runs for the loss of 6 wickets, the hope for a competitive total was quickly vanishing. It was a situation that called for a miracle.
That miracle came in the form of Mohammad Nabi.
The veteran all-rounder stepped onto the pitch with a clear mission: to counter-attack. And he did so with breathtaking force. But it was in the very last over of the innings that he truly etched his name into the memory of every fan watching.
Facing the Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage, Nabi flipped a switch. What followed was an absolute masterclass in power-hitting. He launched an astonishing assault, sending five balls from that single over soaring over the boundary for sixes. The stadium erupted as the runs piled up, with a massive 32 coming from that over alone.
Thanks to Nabi’s blitz, he not only scored an incredible 60 runs from just 22 balls but also set a new record for the fastest-ever fifty by an Afghan player in One Day Internationals. His heroic effort single-handedly lifted Afghanistan from a point of near-collapse to a challenging total of 169. It was a stunning turnaround, a powerful reminder that in cricket, the game is never over until the final ball is bowled.
