An average hike of 6.23 percent in electricity rates for all consumers was approved by the Chhattisgarh State Electricity Regulatory Commission on Monday. The increased prices will be effective from July 1. Although, while keeping concessions on women's self-help groups, hospitals, and tribal areas, the Congress has strongly objected to the move as a government "loot."

When will new rates be applied?
The increase will be effective from July 1 as stated by a government official. The rates had a projected increase of 24% requested by the states power distribution company for fiscal year 2026-27. The Chhattisgarh State Electricity Regulatory Commission stated that it has approved the revised rates based on estimated revenue requirements and that concessions for women's self-help groups, hospitals, and tribal areas will remain.

How much is the burden on household consumers?
Domestic consumers' electricity rates will go up by 30 to 50 paisa per unit and about 6 million households in the state will be affected. Rates for non-domestic users have been increased by 20 to 40 paisa per unit and agricultural pumps by 40 paisa per unit. There will be a 10% discount on power consumption by self-help groups ( women) operated industrially.

Exemptions provided in tribal rural regions.
The commission also stated that the 10% rebate for hospitals, nursing homes, diagnostic centers, South zone tribal development authorities Bastar & Sarguja north zone development authority, will continue in all the tribal rural regions. A 25% rebate on energy charges on the running of mobile towers has been maintained for Bastar & Sarguja tribal authority regions and electrical vehicle charging stations tariff has been fixed at Rs 7.13 per unit.

Charges also hike for agricultural pump connections.
The rebate in energy charge on subsidized non-agricultural pumps in the state will be increased from 30% to 40% and farmers will be permitted to run lights and fans within 100 watts near the agricultural pumps as they did before. The rebate of 10% for poha and puffed rice mills, category LV-5, would continue. Surcharge on delayed payments will decrease from 1.5% per month to 0.04% per day.

Congress targets the rise in electricity prices.
The state Congress has raised strong objections to the rise in electricity prices. Sushil Anand Shukla, head of the state Congress's communications department stated, "The BJP government has increased electricity charges by 30-50 paisa to domestic consumers and by 20-40 paisa for non-domestic ones." He also said that the farmers have also been targeted and that electricity rates for agricultural pumps will be increased by 40 Paisa, making it the 5th hike under the current BJP rule.
