24 Hours of Extreme Rainfall Predicted, Shivnath and Kharun Rivers Breach Danger Marks
Raipur: A severe weather crisis has gripped Chhattisgarh as continuous downpours lash the state for the third consecutive day. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an urgent red alert warning of extremely heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours. The relentless deluge has threw normal life out of gear across multiple major cities, submerging residential colonies, triggering flash floods, and forcing the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) into a high-alert standby mode.
Rivers in Spate and Urban Submersion
The state's primary lifelines, the Shivnath and Kharun rivers, are raging violently after days of uninterrupted showers. The water level in the Shivnath River has officially breached the critical danger threshold, completely submerging the Mahamra Anicut.
In the capital city of Raipur, as well as in Durg, Bhilai, Dhamtari, and Gariabandh, major roads have effectively transformed into overflowing ponds. Critical urban pockets in Raipur, including Tatibandh, Professor Colony, Parshuram Nagar, and Fafadeep, reported severe waterlogging with half-submerged vehicles stranded on roads. In response to the growing crisis, Raipur Mayor Meenal Choubey personally inspected the worst-hit zones to oversee emergency drainage and relief operations.
Traffic Gridlocks and Crucial Highway Advisory
The intense waterlogging has crippled regional connectivity, causing massive traffic gridlocks in the twin cities of Durg and Bhilai. To prevent accidents and manage the chaos, local administration issued an emergency travel advisory for commuters navigating near the Kumhari Overbridge on the busy Raipur-Durg National Highway. District authorities have warned that if the river levels rise any further, a massive evacuation drive will be initiated to shift families living along the low-lying riverbanks to temporary municipal shelter homes.
Dramatic Flash Flood Rescues and Bay of Bengal Low Pressure
The sheer force of the monsoon was felt on Sunday when sudden flash floods trapped local workforces. Highly trained rescue teams executed two separate, high-stakes operations, successfully saving 14 laborers caught in the swirling currents of the Bagnai River, and another 14 workers marooned at an inundated construction site in Mahasamund.
According to meteorologists at the Raipur IMD center, this massive weather system is being fueled by a potent low-pressure area hovering over the northwest Bay of Bengal, right off the coasts of northern Odisha and West Bengal. This system is continuously pumping moisture into central India, triggering intense precipitation.
Districts Facing the Maximum 24-Hour Rain Fury
The meteorological department has specifically warned that the next 24 hours will be highly critical for central and northern Chhattisgarh. Heavy to very heavy downpours are expected to hammer a long list of districts, including:
Central & Mining Belt: Bilaspur, Korba, Raigarh, Mungeli, Janjgir-Champa, Sakti, and Sarangarh-Bilaigarh.
Extended Alert Zones: Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi, Surguja, Jashpur, Korea, Balodabazar, Bemetara, Kabirdham, Rajnandgaon, and the tri-district area of Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur.
When Will the Deluge Finally Stop?
Giving a sliver of hope to the struggling citizens, the IMD weather bulletin indicated a timeline for relief. While the state must brave extreme weather conditions through Tuesday, this relentless spell of heavy monsoon rainfall is projected to start weakening and subsiding uniformly across Chhattisgarh from July 8 onwards. Until then, citizens are strongly advised to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from vulnerable water bodies.
