Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Amid the colorful sights of Rome in Spring, a more subdued yet impactful event is taking place simultaneously: pre-conclave meetings of cardinals of the Catholic Church are conducting discussions to choose their Pope Francis successor. Informal gatherings of listening sessions are forming constructive impressions ahead of the formal conclave set for Wednesday.

The Pre-Gaming Ceremony

With Spring Comes Renewed Life Strain Tourists

While tourists strain the streets of Rome, and blooming jasmine fills the air, the cardinals remain in meetings. The closed meetings hold private dinners, coffee dates, and chatting over pasta, which serve as a prelude to the conclave wherein 120 eligible cadre-electors will surreptitiously cast votes at the Sistine Chapel.

Different dynamics these days reflect the ones with Italian cardinals bustling with Bergolglian fever before Francis’ 2013 election. These Canadian reformist cardy and some other young playoff beat deck Murphy O’Connor were headlining Kurosawa over Marella while Bergoglio was dining across the city. As Murphy said “These guys cross finally dining across the street so we did ride at macrons.”

"He would love to be at the heart of the party," said Nichols during an interview while at the Venerable English College. "I myself am a bit more subdued than that."

Nichols claims that he is reasoning deeply as the cardinals make an appraisal of the needs of the Church each day. He has his thoughts ready, but he is willing to be convinced, and thus hopes that in a few days he will be more certain his position will change.

Not Change for Its Own Sake, But Continuity
As a personal conjecture, Nichols hopes that the next pope will be someone ready to combine both continuity and change which means to build on Francis’s reforms which focused on caring for the poor, the environment, and a more decentralized Church.

"He took so many initiatives that one cannot simply call original without rooting them a bit more," explained Nichols.

Some Cardinals are worried, perhaps more worried than they like to let on about the divisions within the church. Nichols has used this opportunity to point out that the Church in all its evils has always had disagreements, and has had to defend these differences with a united front.

2013 Lessons and "Team Bergoglio"

With the election of Francis in 2013 came the culmination of what can only be called an extremely well choreographed campaign by reformist cardinals who sought out support for Bergoglio in what can only be called informal settings. This pre convocation meeting allowed the pope to firstly emerge as a potential candidate after the pre legion divisions from the Italian group.

Austen Ivereigh’s biography “Team Bergoglio” describes how sociocultural events were used to campaign for Bergoglio in 2005. Additionally, they intended to ensure that he received 25 votes on the first round ballot, which they succeeded in doing.

No Obvious Leader, but an Obvious Strategy

None of the Bergoglio candidates have been chosen by Nichols. For him, the conclave is a form of discernment and not a competition.

“I’m not going to go in thinking it’s a political election and I want my side to win. What I have is a fixed set of preconceived ideas, but I am prepared to let go of them.”

What he did underscore was the Francis legacy: the new multicultural diversity of the College of Cardinals, including Tongan and Mongolian nationals, is a fundamental Francis legacy.
