In the proceedings which followed the death of Pope Francis, Cardinal Kevin Farrell was placed into the role of interim head for the Vatican. Farrell, as camerlengo, has the duty of managing the Vatican on a daily basis in the interregnum following the death of a pope and the election of a new one.

Among his responsibilities are certifying the death of the pope, safeguarding the papal palace, making arrangements for the funeral rites, and setting up the conclave for the forthcoming papal election.

Background and Education

Cardinal Farrell is 77 years old. A native of Dublin, he is now a naturalized American. He possesses an MBA from the University of Notre Dame and in addition to English, he speaks Spanish, Italian and Irish Gaelic. These qualifications have enhanced his effectiveness in the Vatican’s leadership positions.

Vatican Leadership Advances

Farrell was designated in 2016 as the head of the Vatican’s Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life as part of the reorganization which Pope Francis made to streamline the Vatican administration. Shortly thereafter he made him a cardinal and in 2019, camerlengo.

By 2023, Farrell assumed additional responsibilities, having disseminated several of these Metropolitanate functions, such as President of the Supreme Court of Vatican City State, head of the Commission for Confidential Matters, and chair of the Committee for Investments.

Ministry Initatives and Experience in US

Farrell attended the University of Salamanca and the Pontifical Gregorian University to study theology. After becoming a priest in 1978, he served as a chaplain in Monterrey, Mexico. Subsequently, he went to the Archdiocese of Washington D.C. and became Bishop of Dallas in 2007.

Leadership in Church During Change

Cardinal Farrell has spent years handling the archdioceses in Italy and America, which gives him an advantage as far as pastoral matter is concerned and allows him to smoothly manage the critical period of transformation in the Catholic Church.
