India Post RPLI new rule: Scheduled bank savings account holders get new eligibility option

Post

India Post has expanded the eligibility criteria for Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI), allowing an operative savings account with the Post Office Savings Bank (POSB) or any scheduled bank to serve as an additional eligibility criterion for the scheme.

The revised provision came into effect on August 14, 2026. The move is aimed at helping people who move from rural to urban areas maintain their RPLI coverage and pay premiums through a savings account with any scheduled bank.

Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar announced the change, saying that an operative Savings Bank Account with POSB or any scheduled bank is now an additional eligibility criterion for RPLI.

What has changed under the new RPLI rule?

Under the revised eligibility criteria, an operative savings account with either POSB or any scheduled bank can be used to establish eligibility for RPLI.

The change provides an additional route for establishing eligibility for the insurance scheme. It is also intended to help existing policyholders who move from rural areas to cities maintain their RPLI coverage and make premium payments through a scheduled bank savings account.

However, the new provision should not be understood to mean that every person with a scheduled bank savings account is automatically guaranteed an RPLI policy. The account has been added as an additional eligibility criterion, while other applicable conditions continue to apply.

What does the new RPLI rule mean for people moving to cities?

The change is particularly relevant for people who relocate from rural to urban areas.

The revised provision is intended to help such policyholders maintain their RPLI coverage and pay premiums through a savings account with any scheduled bank after moving. The move is aimed at supporting continuity of insurance coverage when policyholders change their place of residence.

The government has described the change as a step towards making affordable, government-backed life insurance accessible to more families.

What documents are accepted for RPLI eligibility?

The process of establishing eligibility has also been simplified.

Applicants can use any of the following as proof:

  • CBS status
  • Email statements
  • Mobile banking screenshots
  • ATM statements
  • Updated passbooks

Where acceptable digital proof is available, a physical bank certificate is not required, according to the minister's announcement.

This means applicants who can provide acceptable digital evidence of their savings account status may not need to obtain a separate certificate from their bank.

What is Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI)?

Rural Postal Life Insurance, or RPLI, is a life insurance scheme offered by India Post for the rural population.

India Post introduced RPLI on March 24, 1995, after the government accepted the recommendations of the Malhotra Committee to extend Postal Life Insurance coverage to rural areas.

The scheme's prime objective is to provide insurance cover to the rural public, particularly weaker sections and women workers, while also spreading awareness about life insurance among the rural population.

Who can opt for RPLI?

According to the information released alongside the latest eligibility change, a person can opt for Rural Postal Life Insurance in the 18 to 43 years age bracket. The maximum investment mentioned for rural PLI is Rs 10 lakh.

These details are separate from the latest change concerning savings accounts. The new provision specifically adds an operative POSB or scheduled bank savings account as an additional eligibility criterion.

Does a scheduled bank account make you automatically eligible for RPLI?

No. Simply holding a savings account with a scheduled bank does not mean that a person is automatically guaranteed an RPLI policy.

India Post has introduced an operative savings account with POSB or any scheduled bank as an additional eligibility criterion. Applicants must still meet the other applicable requirements for RPLI.

The key change is that an operative savings account with a scheduled bank can now be used to establish eligibility, while the simplified documentation process allows certain digital records to be used as proof.

For people who move from rural areas to cities, the change is intended to make it easier to maintain RPLI coverage and continue premium payments through their scheduled bank account.
