In a sign of improving relations between the BJP and the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, BJP state president K. Annamalai has adopted a softer tone towards AIADMK leaders. This shift follows repeated complaints to BJP’s national leadership about his previous criticisms.

“I hold no grudge against any leader or party,” Annamalai said, reflecting a more conciliatory approach.

Alliance Reset Hinges on Annamalai’s Role

The AIADMK had earlier demanded that Annamalai either be removed or restrained as a condition to rebuild ties. Although there are rumors about him stepping down, Annamalai hasn’t addressed them directly. He stated, “I am willing to work as a cadre. I didn’t enter politics for power but to bring change in Tamil Nadu.”

Despite this, Annamalai defends his efforts to build a BJP-led alliance, insisting he offered honest feedback to the central leadership to guide decisions.

Past Strategy Targeted AIADMK and DMK

While open to stepping down, Annamalai stands by his leadership. His aggressive stance was aimed at positioning BJP as the main opposition in the state, challenging both AIADMK and the ruling DMK.

Since taking over in 2021, he frequently criticized prominent Dravidian figures, including CN Annadurai and Jayalalithaa. He even labeled AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami as "illiterate," sparking public disputes that led to AIADMK exiting the NDA alliance.

Election Results Reflect Missed Opportunities

Annamalai believed BJP could grow by filling the opposition space left by AIADMK. However, this approach failed to gain traction quickly. In the last Lok Sabha election, both BJP and AIADMK failed to win any seats, while the DMK-led alliance dominated.

Had the two parties remained allied, they might have secured multiple seats through combined vote shares.

New Players Change the Political Landscape

Actor Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, has emerged as a new player. Unlike others, Vijay has focused criticism on the DMK and BJP, leaving AIADMK untouched. His openness to coalition politics may offer AIADMK new partnership options.

Vijay's pragmatic approach has revived AIADMK’s hopes of forming alliances, especially after other actor-led efforts failed.

AIADMK Now Holds Advantage in Alliance Talks

Despite not winning any seats, AIADMK performed better than BJP in terms of vote share. This has given AIADMK an edge in current negotiations. Recently, AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Though he claimed alliance talks were not part of the meeting, Shah later expressed confidence in the NDA’s future in Tamil Nadu.

Future of the BJP-AIADMK Partnership

Annamalai has shown willingness to revise his statements about AIADMK’s past and present leaders. However, whether the BJP can collaborate effectively with AIADMK under his leadership remains uncertain. With challenges growing for the BJP nationally, ensuring unity in Tamil Nadu is a strategic priority.
