Born R. Gnanathesikan in a small village in Tamil Nadu, Ilaiyaraaja's journey into music began in a humble setting. He grew up in a financially challenged family and was initially part of a traveling musical troupe led by his elder brother, Pavalar Varadarajan. It was here he honed his early skills before formally training under Master Dhanraj, who introduced him to Western classical music, counterpoint, and the guitar.
His official debut in 1976 with the film Annakili was revolutionary. Ilaiyaraaja masterfully blended Indian folk and classical traditions with Western orchestral arrangements, creating a sound that was fresh, sophisticated, and instantly captivating. This unique fusion became his signature, influencing generations of musicians and filmmakers.
One testament to his sheer genius and unparalleled speed is the anecdote about composing the entire background score for the Kamal Haasan starrer Aayiram Nilave Vaa in a mere 30 minutes after watching the film. Similarly, he reportedly completed the score for the 1994 film Adharmam in just 45 minutes – a feat almost unimaginable in the industry.
Ilaiyaraaja's brilliance isn't confined to India. He holds the distinct honor of being the first Asian composer to have a full symphony performed by the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London, a landmark achievement that showcased his symphonic prowess to the world.
His contributions have been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan (India's second-highest civilian honor), multiple National Film Awards for Best Music Direction, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award.
