Bengaluru will soon see an expansion of digital Variable Messaging System (VMS) boards aimed at improving traffic management. These boards will display real-time travel information, helping commuters navigate the city's notoriously congested roads.

According to officials, the initiative is designed to provide live traffic updates, alerts on road closures, accident notifications, and alternative route suggestions. The Bengaluru Traffic Police and the Electronics City Industrial Township Authority (ELCITA) are leading this effort.

New VMS Boards to be Installed Across Bengaluru

Currently, Bengaluru has four VMS boards installed at:

  • Hebbal (two locations)
  • Basaveshwara Circle
  • Windsor Manor

Now, the Bengaluru Traffic Police plans to install eight more VMS units at locations such as Old Madras Road and Marathahalli. These boards will offer real-time travel time updates and important traffic messages.

ELCITA, on the other hand, is set to install three additional VMS units in Electronics City. These boards will specifically provide live travel updates for both the elevated expressway and service roads on Hosur Road.

Electronics City to Benefit from New Digital Displays

Electronics City, which houses major IT companies such as Infosys, Biocon, Wipro, and Tech Mahindra, will benefit significantly from the new digital traffic boards. The 9.9 km-long elevated expressway from Central Silk Board Junction to Electronics City, operational since 2010, was intended to ease congestion. The new VMS units will enhance travel efficiency further.

Planned installation locations in Electronics City include:

  • Silk Board Junction
  • NHAI Electronics City Toll Plaza
  • E-City Toll Plaza (West Phase)

These VMS boards will display Google API-based travel times for different routes between Electronics City and Silk Board Junction.

Advanced Traffic Monitoring with AI and IoT Integration

The upcoming VMS system will be equipped with AI-driven decision-making and predictive analytics to improve real-time traffic management. Officials have confirmed that the system will:

  • Process real-time traffic data efficiently.
  • Analyze traffic patterns for better predictions.
  • Integrate with IoT devices if needed.
