Dhaka: A Bangladesh court has refused to hear the bail plea of Hindu saint Chinmay Krishna Das, arrested in a sedition case. The court said that the hearing will be held on the previously scheduled date of January 2. Court officials said that Chittagong Metropolitan Session Judge Saif-ul Islam rejected the petition because the lawyer who filed the petition requesting advance hearing did not have Vakalatnama on behalf of the saint.
The lawyer did not have the power of attorney
A court official said, “Lawyer Ravindra Ghosh requested for further hearing after another lawyer told the judge that he (Ghosh) did not have any Vakalatnama to represent the saint. After this the judge rejected the petition.”
Slaves are suffering from diseases
Ghosh said in his petition that Das has been arrested in a “false and fabricated case” while he is suffering from diabetes, asthma and other ailments. However, the lawyer admitted that he did not go to the jail to obtain the signature of Vakalatnama from Das. He said, “I will now meet Chinmoy in jail and obtain Vakalatnama (Power of Attorney).”
has been charged with treason
Das, a former leader of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), was arrested at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on November 25. A Chittagong court sent him to jail the next day. The court rejected his bail plea as he has been charged with sedition for allegedly insulting the national flag.
