On Wednesday night, Asaduddin Owaisi, Member of Parliament from Hyderabad and leader of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), held a symbolic protest in the Lok Sabha. He opposed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, by tearing a physical copy of it during the debate.

While explaining his action, Owaisi referred to Mahatma Gandhi’s civil disobedience in South Africa. He stated, “Mahatma Gandhi had said, ‘My conscience doesn’t accept this,’ and he tore it up. Similarly, I am tearing this bill. This is unconstitutional.”

Criticism of the Bill’s Intent

Owaisi argued that the Bill is an attempt to divide society along religious lines. He accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using religious issues to create discord. He also submitted ten proposed amendments, urging Parliament to consider them.

He further claimed, “The purpose of this Bill is to target and humiliate Muslims. It undermines their rights and seeks to reduce their representation.”
