At the Jinguchaa song launch in Chennai, Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman spoke candidly about working on Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam and starring Kamal Haasan. Rahman acknowledged the challenge of contributing to a project that reunites two legends who previously created the iconic film Nayakan.
“I feel like every scene Kamal sir is looking at me from the screen, asking, ‘What are you going to do?’” Rahman shared with a smile, highlighting the creative pressure of composing for such a cinematic giant.
Honoring the Past, Embracing the Present
Rahman reminisced about the groundbreaking collaboration between Kamal Haasan, Mani Ratnam, and Ilaiyaraaja in Nayakan, calling it a film that “reinvented cinema.” However, he emphasized that Thug Life is a different cinematic experience with a distinct, contemporary musical style.
“This movie is not Nayakan. It’s different... It’s got a more today’s sound, but still has the magic of what they did together in portions,” Rahman noted.
A Continuous Creative Process
Despite being months into the scoring process, Rahman expressed unwavering excitement about the project. “I’ve been scoring every day for the past four months, sending it to Mani sir for feedback,” he said, highlighting the evolving and collaborative nature of the film’s music production.
Heartfelt Gratitude and Wishes
Concluding his speech, Rahman offered well-wishes to the film’s team. He mentioned Trisha, Abhirami, Silambarasan (Simbu), Ravi, Rajayant, HMV, and Sarika, extending blessings to everyone involved. He ended with the phrase: “Ella pugazhum iraivanukke” (All glory to God).
