Suspense crime, Digital Desk : Carlos Alcaraz launched his Queen's Club title defence in impressive fashion, dispatching Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets to mark a strong start to his grass-court season. The Spaniard, fresh off his Roland Garros triumph, showed his adaptability by quickly finding his footing on the London lawns.
The world number two wasted no time in the first set, showcasing his powerful groundstrokes and deft touches to take it 6-1. Cerundolo, ranked 26th, offered stiffer resistance in the second set, pushing Alcaraz and earning break point opportunities. However, the defending champion held firm, saving those crucial points before securing the decisive break to take the set 7-5 and seal the victory.
Speaking after the match, Alcaraz acknowledged the quick transition from the clay courts of Paris to the grass at Queen's, emphasizing the need to adjust his movement and game. Despite the minimal preparation time, his performance highlighted his all-court prowess, with his signature drop shots and attacking net play proving effective.
This win sets up a potential second-round clash against either British number one Jack Draper or Argentina's Mariano Navone. For Alcaraz, who is also the reigning Wimbledon champion, this victory is a positive first step as he aims to build momentum for his title defence at the All England Club in July. Meanwhile, third seed Grigor Dimitrov, a former Queen's champion, withdrew from the tournament due to a shoulder injury.
Alcaraz's confident start reaffirms his status as a formidable force on grass and a strong contender to retain his Queen's Club crown.
