Renowned Bollywood actor Akshaye Khanna is officially stepping into Telugu cinema with Mahakali, the latest entry in the fast-expanding Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe (PVCU). The film holds the distinction of being the first female-led superhero movie in the franchise.
While the specifics of Akshaye’s character are still under wraps, sources suggest that his role will be pivotal to the film’s narrative. Whether he portrays a villain or a hidden hero remains a mystery—one that’s only fueling the buzz around the film.
New Age Superhero Universe Expands
Directed by Puja Aparna Kolluru and created by Prasanth Varma, Mahakali is currently in the pre-production phase. The makers are carefully finalising casting choices, especially for the titular role, which is expected to redefine cinematic portrayals of Goddess Kali. The lead actress will reportedly challenge traditional beauty norms and bring intensity and depth to the superhero character.
Mahakali continues the PVCU timeline that began with HanuMan, which starred Teja Sajja and introduced Indian audiences to a mythological superhero world rooted in Indian culture.
A Power-Packed Line-Up in the PVCU
The universe is growing fast. Upcoming projects include:
Jai Hanuman, a sequel to HanuMan, starring Rishab Shetty
Adhira, based on Lord Indra, featuring Dasari Kalyan
Each film in the PVCU is crafted to bring India’s mythological icons into a superhero format, making it one of the most ambitious cinematic projects in the country.
Akshaye Khanna’s Return to the Spotlight
Akshaye Khanna was last seen in Chhaava, a film that marked his return to the big screen and turned into a blockbuster. His addition to Mahakali brings seasoned star power and will likely add narrative gravitas to the film’s storyline.
